I offer semi-traditional and contemporary models, both of which are engineered to give effect to my design philosophy.
The principal difference between the models lies in body construction but both share a number of innovative features, some of which are unique to Bull classical guitars.
- My more traditional design has conventional, solid back and sides and is available with either 7 bar fan or matrix soundboard bracing. This model offers a traditional tone with considerable responsiveness and power, projection and sustain.
- My more contemporary design has laminated back and sides. Both the back and sides are much thicker than with traditional construction and the back is arched and braceless. This construction, in conjunction with the matrix braced soundboard, retains the responsiveness of the traditional model but offers increased forward sound projection and a more rounded, focused sound, plus even greater sustain.
- The 7 bar fan-braced design is based on the traditional Torres design but is modified with 3 lateral braces to improve structural integrity. This allows the soundboard to be made thinner than is possible with conventional fan bracing, making it more responsive.
- The matrix bracing design uses 15 braces arranged in a grid pattern. The greater rigidity inherent in this design allows additional weight savings, making it even more efficient.
- The neck is detachable. The neck shaft extends beyond the heel to the first harmonic bar and is cradled by an extension of the neck block. It is fixed at the heel and the cradle. This approach makes for a very rigid neck/body joint and improves sustain. It also streamlines the construction process and makes soundboard repairs easier in the event of damage.
- The neck is braced with a light but rigid carbon fibre composite channel. This reduces the loss of string energy through neck movement and allows a slim neck profile without the risk of excessive forward bow.
- I use both nut and saddle compensation of the scale length to ensure accurate intonation.
